A Small-Business Website Checklist: Clarity, Accessibility, and Enquiries

A useful business website helps a visitor understand the offer, trust what they read, and take a clear next step. Check the whole journey on a phone before adding more visual effects.

Give every key page a job

Write down who visits each page and the decision they need to make. A service page might answer what you do, who it suits, what the process involves, and how to ask about scope. A contact page should make the available contact methods obvious. Avoid making every page repeat the same broad promise.

Draft the main heading and first paragraph before choosing a layout. Could someone understand the offer without an animation finishing or an image loading? Use specific language about real services. Do not add invented client logos, testimonials, awards, prices, or performance statistics to make a page feel complete.

Make the phone journey straightforward

Check a narrow screen with real content, not placeholder sentences. Long headings should wrap naturally. Buttons need clear labels and enough space to tap without hitting a neighbour. Navigation should remain usable when the page is zoomed, and important text should not disappear behind a fixed chat bubble or footer.

Use readable line lengths and enough contrast for ordinary body text. Decorative artwork can support a page, but it should not push the answer several screens down. Try the journey with reduced motion enabled and with the keyboard. Record any point at which you cannot tell where the focus has gone.

Ask only for what the enquiry needs

A first-contact form rarely needs a long questionnaire. Decide which fields your team actually uses to respond. Label them visibly, explain required information, and put useful error messages next to the relevant field. The W3C forms tutorial explains how labels, instructions, and feedback support accessible forms.

Test success and failure as separate experiences. If a submission fails, preserve the visitor’s text and provide an honest retry route. A confirmation should appear only after the destination accepted the enquiry. Never collect passwords, payment details, or sensitive records in a general contact form.

Make the content understandable to search engines

Use a descriptive page title, a logical heading structure, and ordinary links to important pages. Give each article or service a stable address. Put substantive text in the delivered page so it can be read without relying on a complicated interaction. Search metadata should describe the visible content rather than promise something different.

Google Search Central: helpful, reliable, people-first content prioritizes content created to help people. Our practical recommendation is to answer real customer questions thoroughly and update those answers when the business changes. No checklist can guarantee a ranking, and a large number of near-identical pages is not evidence of usefulness.

Test the entire path before launch

  • Open key pages directly, then navigate with Back and Forward.
  • Check the menu, buttons, forms, and article links on a phone-sized viewport.
  • Verify contact details, service descriptions, image rights, and all visible claims.
  • Check what happens when an image, network request, or form destination fails.
  • Confirm which analytics are active and keep personal form contents out of event data.
  • Check the site’s titles, canonical addresses, robots policy, and sitemap for its actual deployment environment.

Use a private preview for stakeholder review, with indexing disabled until public publication is authorized. Keep a rollback plan and a short list of who owns content updates, hosting, analytics, and incoming enquiries.

Choose the next improvement from evidence

After launch, look for a specific point where people struggle: an unclear service distinction, a form that errors, or a slow page. Combine available analytics with direct feedback and accessibility checks. A click count alone cannot tell you whether the customer’s question was answered.
